What are the accessories that every stylish woman needs? Well, there is no short answer I’m afraid, unless of course you want to have the exact same outfit as everyone else, which of course I know you don’t 🙂 For those of you that know me, you will know that I try hard not to generalise and tell you that you must have a pair of black courts, a pair of neutral courts etc. because we are all different. So my must have accessories will be different to yours. What I can do though, is give you some tips on how to create your perfect capsule wardrobe of accessories and I can also tell you that accessories are a must have, full stop. No outfit is complete, in my humble opinion, without accessories. (Now I have just given you permission for a new bag or pair of shoes!)
What to Include in an Accessories Capsule Wardrobe
The first step, as with anything in your wardrobe is to think about the different events your outfits cover, so that you can get maximum cost per wear from your accessories. For example, there is little point in buying a pair of sky high sandals from Jimmy Choo for one party that never get worn again (if it’s your wedding and they are part of the treasured memories of the day, that’s different). However, buying a pair of Jimmy Choo court shoes that you wear regularly to work, is a much better option. Below are some of the accessory capsules you might need and some suggestions of what you might want to include in them:
Business – court shoes in 1 or 2 neutrals and an accent colour. Flat shoes in a neutral and an accent colour. A tote bag in 1 or 2 neutrals and an accent colour. Statement necklaces and scarves to add colour or finish the neckline of your outfits. Belts if you wear them, 1 or 2 neutrals and an accent. Several pairs of earrings, a classic watch with a neutral or metallic strap, brooches (very on trend at the moment) to add some personality to a jacket, simple bracelets (avoid anything jangly that distracts people when you are talking if you use your hands a lot) You may also want to include a feminine briefcase or laptop bag, a pen and a leather organiser.
Smart or daytime occasion, such as lunches, the Races, Weddings etc. – Heeled shoes in a neutral and/or an accent colour (depending how frequently you have this kind of occasion) shoulder and/or clutch bag to go with the shoes. Necklace and earring sets. A hat in a neutral colour and possibly an accent colour.
Weekend casual – Shopper or tote bag, crossbody bag, flat shoes or loafers, trainers, scarves and casual jewellery pieces. A mixture of neutrals and accent colours to fit with your wardrobe colour scheme.
Summer & Holiday – Sandals and espadrilles, a basket bag, lighter coloured casual handbags, lightweight scarves, casual jewellery pieces, perhaps beads or shells. Choose neutrals of white, nude, stone, tan and metallics and add at least one accent colour in some of the pieces.
Evening – Decorative heels and/or flat shoes in metallics (then they will go with any colour outfit) add more accent colours if you go out a lot in the evening. Clutch bags in metallics or accents, Sparkly jewellery, drop earrings, cuffs and bracelets.
One other little thing I’d like to throw in before I finish, is to suggest that you think of makeup as an accessory too. Because I think it is. It is another finishing touch to your look, that you can use to bring your best colours to your face. Wearing a lipstick that is a fabulous colour for you can make such a difference.
