I don’t know about you, but one of my favourite things about Autumn is knitwear. There is nothing better on a crisp day than a cosy piece of cashmere, well maybe an open fire and a cup of hot chocolate, now that would be perfect!
It’s been a slow start to Autumn here in the UK and although the early morning is feeling distinctly more chilly, the daytime is still pretty mild, so I am desperate to break into my knits. I have moved them into my wardrobe in the hope that I will get some wear out of them soon (I know, by January we will be desperate for some warmer weather) I’ve been thinking about what are the most useful knits that will earn their place in a capsule wardrobe and here are the 8 I would get the most wear out of…

Starting with the knit dress and the Coatigan.
Knit dresses are huge this season and why wouldn’t you wear one? They are cosy, easy to wear and just need a few accessories to make them stylish. I’ve added a gilet for extra warmth, long boots and a hat in tone on tone grey which is incredibly elegant.
The Coatigan can go from casual to smart casual but works as an easy top layer if you are in and out of the car when a coat can be too bulky, or on those chilly but not freezing days when a coat is too heavy. I’ve used autumnal greens with a little luxe shimmer to smarten it up.

Next the tunic style sweater and the evening knit.
Longer line knits are my autumn/winter essentials with a pair of leggings or slim leg trousers for days when I am working at my desk. They can quickly be smartened up with a pair of ankle boots and a scarf if I have to run into town, but keep me cosy while I’m working. Plus they have the added benefit of hiding any lumps and bumps.
If you are one of those people who is always cold, an evening knit is a great alternative to a dress or blouse for chilly restaurants, or dare I say, for Christmas Day and festive parties.

The next two knits are the fine T-shirt style knit and the classic cardigan.
T-shirt knits work perfectly under tailored jackets as there is no bulk. Here I have shown one with a suit for the office but they work just as well at the weekends too layered under cardigans.
The classic cardigan is a life saver through all four seasons when you need an extra layer. They work with summer dresses as well as blouses in the winter to give you a little extra warmth, or even with a pretty skirt for an evening out. Just choose one in one of your best colours as it will be close to your face.

Last but not least are the luxury cashmere sweater and the polo neck.
You can’t beat a luxurious cashmere sweater for cosy lounging. Add a pair of soft trousers or joggers and cashmere socks. If you have to venture out top it with a wrap for an outfit that’s as comfortable as your PJs but much more stylish.
The humble polo neck is having its moment this season. As it isn’t friendly to those of us with a larger bust I’ve layered it under a V-neck (this is exactly how I will be wearing my Eileen Fisher dress this winter) Add multiple colours to your knit collection and change your accessories for a completely different look.
