How to Layer for Spring’s Changeable Weather

Although we have seen some gorgeous Spring sunshine over the last few weeks, there is still a chill in the air in the mornings and evenings. I am not optimistic enough to believe we won’t have some more cold weather, but I do want to wear some new Spring pieces. (Check out the just released (Spring Capsule wardrobe) The answer is layers that you can add or remove depending on the weather. But layering is a skill if you don’t want to look like you have just thrown on a mixed jumble of items from your wardrobe. So here are my tips on how to layer for Spring’s changeable weather.

How to Layer

Choose multiple thin layers.

It’s tempting to add a coat over a chunky knit, but believe me a better option is to start with a camisole top, add a thin shirt, lightweight knit and then a jacket. Then as the day gets warmer take off the layers. You might want to “undress” down to the camisole and shirt, but you could also opt for removing the shirt layer and wearing the camisole under the knit or even alone under the jacket.

How to Layer

Use toning colours to create an interesting look.

Here I have used the season’s desert shades and different textures, mixing linen with the leather jacket and suede espadrilles, to make the outfit more interesting.

How to Layer

Use layers to go from office (or smart) to casual.

I’ve mixed a wrap front dress with a camisole so that it doesn’t reveal too much cleavage and added a blazer for the office. For the weekend, wear with a cardigan and add the cami for cooler days or wear without for warm Summer days or evenings.

Layering I have found difficult in the past as I can look too bulky especially as I am only 5ft tall. I Am going to purchase option 1 as it will suit my smart casual lifestyle wardrobe that is in production.
