3 Essential Winter Coats You Need in Your Wardrobe

Since passing the 50 mark I find I don’t need a coat unless it’s really cold, which it has been here for the last week or so. But there are some that are really useful to have and that you can bring out year after year. I think there are 3 essential winter coats you need in your capsule wardrobe and a few others that are nice to have, or that you might add depending on your lifestyle.

Essential Winter Coats – The Classic

The first of the essential winter coats is what I call the classic. This will be a great quality wool coat, in a neutral colour, that won’t date. I would recommend a camel, navy, grey or black coat.

My classic coat is in camel and is probably 10 years old! This is the coat to invest in because it is the one that will go with everything dressed up or down (see my recent post on Christmas Wardrobe Essentials) Look for one in wool, or if you have the funds, cashmere. If you want the best of the best the Maxmara camel coat (or the less expensive Weekend Maxmara version) is the one to buy. Sadly mine isn’t a Maxmara but it is Italian from the days when I had 2 shops, so it has really lasted me well.

If you have a cool toned skin, look for a more stone coloured coat than a warm camel or choose one in Navy or Grey.

Essential Winter Coats – The Coloured Coat

My second of the essential winter coats is a coloured coat. If you choose one of your best colours you can use it for more dressy occasions or to brighten up a neutral outfit. During the winter months your coat is often the only part of your outfit that people see, so find one that lifts your mood on a dull day and adds a glow to your skin.

Red is one of my best colours, so my second choice of coat after a neutral had to be red. This one was a Christmas present from hubby a few years ago and I love mixing it with chocolate brown – one of my best combinations. I’ve found lots of coloured coats for you below, if you love green there are some great options and this year there are some lovely pastels too – great for Light colouring.

Essential Winter Coats – The Faux Fur

You might be surprised that I have included a faux fur but there are a couple of reasons why I have. Firstly they are really cosy, so great for the coldest days. Secondly they can add a glamorous touch to any outfit. You can be wearing the plainest of outfits and throw on a faux fur and immediately look more stylish. They are great over an evening dress or for a winter wedding too. They don’t really date so it’s likely to last you for several years giving great cost per wear. Try one and you will wonder how you managed without!

My faux fur is from last winter, I spied it on a visit to M&S and immediately snapped it up. I liked that it wasn’t too bulky and the additional touch of the silver lining. I always get compliments when I wear this coat and being a neutral navy, it goes with everything too.

If you do a lot of outside activities, like dog walking or watching school sports you may also want to add a Puffa or waterproof coat to your essential winter coats.
