How to Wear A Jumper Dress – Plus Body Shape Tips

Now that the weather has cooled I have started looking for some new cosy pieces to add to my wardrobe. One favourite is a sweater dress. But they can be tricky, so here are my tips for how to wear a jumper dress and some options for different body shapes.

How to Wear A Jumper Dress – General Tips

My first recommendation is to get what goes underneath it right. There are a couple of things to consider. Firstly, if you are going to wear tights with it add a slip, especially if it isn’t 100% wool, because it could stick to your legs and ride up as you walk, creating static.

Secondly, if it is a snug fit dress you may want to wear a one piece or some smoothing underwear, so that you don’t see any lumps or bumps. I hate wearing shape wear and would probably only wear it for a special night out. So below I have linked some slips and a few pieces of light shape wear, but I think rather than shoehorn yourself into anything that cuts off the blood supply, choose a dress that skims and sits smoothly with the help of a slip.

What to put underneath:

Personally, I prefer to wear a jumper dress with boots or opaque tights. Unless it is a very fine knit or an evening version, I think they look better with sturdier footwear.

Another alternative and one popular this season, is to create 3 looks by adding a pair of trousers. Choose a matching pair if you can find them or go with the same colour or a printed pair with the same colour in the print.

If your dress bags by the end of the day, wash it following the instructions then gently pull it back into shape before drying it flat. Don’t worry if you get some bobbles, just gently remove them with a wool comb. It isn’t a sign that the dress is poor quality, wool garments do shed naturally, just like a dog or cat looses fur. Once you have washed it a few times it should stop shedding. I wash all of my wool and cashmere on the hand wash programme of my washing machine with a special gentle detergent (you will find plenty of options in the supermarket).

The trick with an apple body shape is to find a dress that has some weight to it, like this cowl neck knitted dress, but isn’t too thick that it adds bulk.

Accessories will play an important part, by drawing the eye away from the tummy area. Add interesting detail at the neck, or if you have great legs, which apples often do, wear a fabulous pair of shoes or boots.
