Here are 10 coat styles with 10 options in each giving you 100 coats to sift through from the comfort of your arm chair – I’ve done the hard work for you!

The Classic Tailored Coat

Typically in a neutral colour, this is where the eternal camel coat would fit. It’s a great option to wear to work over your suit but it also looks really good with a pair of jeans too. Keep everything else paired back to fit with it’s clean lines. Choose one that is waisted if you have curves or a straighter shape for a column shaped body. Wider lapels will balance up a pair shape figure.

The Unstructured Coat

The perfect weekend cosy coat that fits over a chunky knit, but it’s also good for those who are apple shaped as it conceals a tummy.

The Military Coat

100 best coats for the winter season

This coat seems to be “on trend” most years so i would say it’s a pretty safe style to keep for years to come. Choose a length that works for you. Petites can choose a 3/4 length and those who are tall can go for a long sweeping style. Avoid the double breasting if you are full in the bust though. Pear shapes would benefit from epaulettes on the shoulders to balance the hips.

The Peacoat

If you are in and out of the car this is a great style to choose. It’s versatile too; wear it with a leather skirt and heeled boots, tailored trousers and polo neck or culottes and flat boots. Choose a neutral colour and add a colourful scarf or find one in one of your best accent colours to brighten up a monotone outfit.

The Wrap Coat

The wrap coat is elegant and a great option for evenings and smarter occasions but you can also wear it casually left undone. Cinch the belt in to accentuate curves.

The Faux Fur Coat

100 best coats for the winter season

Always popular in the colder months and for evenings, however this season they are everywhere and they are more snuggly and colourful than ever. Throw one over an evening dress or wear it casually with Chelsea boots and leather trousers. Bear (no pun intended) in mind that the bulkier the coat the larger it will make you look. That doesn’t mean to say you can’t enjoy one of these fun coats, choose a thinner version or throw caution to the wind and just enjoy it!

The Sheepskin or Shearling Coat

100 best coats for the winter season

If you want to make an investment and have a little more to spend then a luxurious sheepskin or shearling jacket might be the answer. If you are one of those people who is always cold this coat will keep you seriously toasty. They can be heavy though so they aren’t for everyone.

The Puffa Coat

100 best coats for the winter season

This coat has moved out of the ski resorts and into everyday wear. Another one that keeps you warm especially if it is down filled and has elasticated cuffs that keep the chill out. Choose a long version that will keep your legs warm too or a shorter version if you aren’t expecting to be standing around in the cold. The perfect coat for those of you standing on chilly sports fields or doing a daily walk to school. If you have a waist choose a version with a belt or for apple shapes choose a looser version.

The Parka

100 best coats for the winter season

Another casual coat that has become seriously cool and is seen on off duty fashionistas. Not one I had ever considered until this year when I finally succumbed and then wondered why it had taken me so long. Many have a zip out lining to make them 3 season coats and if you choose one with a drawstring waist you can show off your shape. Opt for a simple style or choose one with faux fur and zip detailing depending on your personality.

The Cape

Finally the cape which has come back after a long absence. The jury is out for me, mostly because I don’t think they are very practical if you like to use a shoulder bag. However, they do look gorgeous for evenings and winter weddings if they have a fur lined hood and they are the perfect option for hiding a baby bump.

I hope there is something here to suit you if you  are buying a new winter coat. Which one will you choose? I think there is a definite faux fur coat hole in my capsule wardrobe!

Hi Maria, I just love the Biba faux fur leopard print coat. It’s gorgeous! I’d love to add it to my leopard print collection (scarf, shoes, bag, jumper). Don’t worry, I don’t wear them all at the same time!
