How to Wear Trousers to a Wedding or Smart Occasion

It’s a question I have revisited more than once (see previous posts herehere and here) but still one that causes a dilemma “Can I wear trousers to a wedding?” As this week it’s my anniversary I thought it might be time to give you some fresh ideas for weddings or other smart occasions. Unless the invitation specifically states no trousers I think they can be just as smart as a dress. And after all, if you aren’t a dress wearer then you won’t want to be buying one for just this occasion that you will never wear again. Separates can be split up and worn again in multiple ways after the event.

Where to buy:

Choose elegant and floaty wide leg trousers in silk or chiffon and wear them with a dress coat. Add classic, quality accessories – these are perfect for using again for other smart occasions – to keep the whole look polished. When you sit down for the reception take the coat off and if necessary add a pretty shrug.

If you are attending a wedding in a town hall or at a restaurant why not choose a pair of smart culottes? Add a dramatic jacket and fabulous accessories.

For this option I’ve chosen a short silk dress and used it as a tunic with a pair of tapered trousers (the perfect outfit for those who are apple shaped or want to conceal a tummy or their hips) Add some glitz with a metallic bag and throw a gorgeous silk kimono over your shoulders that can be discarded for dancing.

Trousers for a laid back wedding party

If a full on wedding guest outfit isn’t needed this outfit is perfect because the lace top and gold accessories will get plenty of use in the party season. Just add a beautifully tailored pair of trousers in a light biscuit colour that elevates the whole outfit.

You don’t always need to dash out and buy a new outfit if you have a wedding or occasion to attend. Often you can get away with something you already have by being clever with accessories. So while the sales are still on buy some of those essentials like a pretty clutch bag or gold or silver sandals or shoes. And if you do have to buy a hat opt for a neutral like cream, biscuit or navy that you will be able to wear again.

Lovely outfits! There are circumstances when people wear trousers to a wedding or big event. My mother has worn trousers when her mobility was not good. I wore trousers to an interstate wedding and I was a minor guest. My top had sequins so was quite dressy.
