Capsule Wardrobe Classics – How to Interpret them for the New Season

There are some items that just never date; Ballet Flats, The Biker Jacket and Capri Pants to name a few. But one is more popular than ever this year – The Breton Top and the reason is that almost every designer had stripes in their Spring/Summer collections. It isn’t just the Breton top though, it’s stripes in general and in every colour and width. From Prada’s leather striped blazer to Sportmax jumpsuits and Gucci’s billowing dresses, there is no doubt if you want to be on trend this season you need stripes.

How to wear stripes to suit your body shape:

Apple – Choose vertical rather than horizontal stripes or stripes that go on the diagonal. A shirt dress like the one below (loose the skinny belt though) draws the eye up and down, just add a striking necklace.

Pear – wear stripes on your top half to give width to your shoulders and balance out your hips. The striped top half, A-line skirt and darker bottom make the dress below perfect for a Pear shape.

Column – stripes can help to add curves to your body and you can wear both horizontal and vertical stripes. The stripes and clever shaping at the waistline on the dress below gives the illusion of curves.

Hourglass – Use stripes that follow the shape of your body to accentuate your glorious curves like the dress below.

When it comes to Petites and taller ladies think also about the scale of the stripe – a petite needs narrow stripes and if they are vertical they will lengthen the body. Conversely if you are taller choose wider stripes worn horizontally to cut up the body.

If all else fails and you are still nervous of wearing stripes add them as an accessory. Below are some of my favourite stripes available in the shops now and how to wear them

One of the most popular places to buy your Breton striped top is Boden who do a huge range of colours, fits and varying sleeve lengths. Alternatively look at Joules for great quality and extra touches like a floral print or beading. Toast is another option for great quality.
