10 Step Polished Makeup Capsule Wardrobe

It’s been a while since I did a beauty post and about time that I updated some of my makeup for Spring. I do love makeup and buy more than I need but end up using the same things all the time. I have been saying over and over in my head “I do not need another Chanel nail varnish” and honestly I don’t but the lure of the Chanel counter with the lovely Jacques sometimes wins out. I’ve decided that I should adopt a Capsule Wardrobe for my makeup too. So, if like me, you don’t want to spend hours in front of the mirror in the morning here is a quick routine using some of my old favourites and a few new Spring items.

By the way I have chosen premium brands but if your budget won’t stretch you can find similar colours and products from lots of other brands – just have a browse in your local Boots. Also if you are editing down all the bits you don’t use you may be able to buy a premium brand rather than several items that don’t see the light of day. Cost per wear works for makeup too!

Step 1 РDepending on what I am doing during the day I will either just wear my absolute favourite face product, Clinique CC Cream, if I am only working at home or running errands, or if I am out for the day I will use a primer and foundation. Both of these are easily applied just with fingers.

Step 2 – The essential under eye cover to even out the dark circles from too early mornings (I wouldn’t mind so much if I had been out in the evening having fun!)

Step 3 – Cream blush. I love the Chanel cream blushes because they go on easily with fingers but set to a finish that looks like a powder. Apply on the apples of the cheek from about the mid point of the eye and in an upwards and outwards direction.

Step 4 – A new product (at least this one was purchased with a Christmas gift card) Les Beiges powder from Chanel. You can either use one close to your skin colour to set your base and even out the colour, or buy one that’s a shade darker and use it as a bronzer. Swirl it on with the brush it comes with or a fat Kubuki Brush.

Step 5 – I like to use an eyeshadow as a base for everything else and my favourite (I know I’ve mentioned it many times before but I’m on to my 4th pot now) is Bobbi Brown Long Wear Cream Shadow in Sandy Gold. I use this all over the lower lid and up just over the crease.

Step 6 – Eyeliner above and below eye and I’m using a brown mostly but alternating¬†with a pine green (for dark brown eyes). If you have blue eyes try blue or grey and for green eyes try a moss green or coffee colour.

Step 7 – Eyeshadows. You could just do step 6 and add mascara and stop there. If you want to add more there are some lovely new Spring eye palettes out. This one, again from Chanel, also comes in a Pink/Grey colour way for those with cool colouring. Use the peach over the bottom half of the lid and the green in the corner of the eye. You could also stop there or add the brown in the crease of the eye blending with a blender brush and then use the ivory just up on the orbital bone under the high point of your brow. Blend the colours together with a little more of the peach.

Step 9 – Mascara. I’m using another old favourite from Estee Lauder in black, because it stays put and doesn’t smudge. But if you have cool colouring look for blue and if you have very fair skin look for a grey or coffee brown which won’t be so harsh on delicate colouring.

Step 10 – A lovely bright pop of Spring colour for the lips. This one is new and comes in two colours – Desinvolte for warm skin tones and Etourdie for cool skin tones. Don’t be put off by how bright they look because the Rouge Coco Shine lipsticks are more like a balm and not too intense, perfect for more casual days or when the better weather arrives.
