Roundup – The Best Little Black Dresses

It’s that time of year when we start to plan for Christmas parties and finding that Little Black Dress that is just right for your shape. I’ve rounded up the best from the high street for you whether you have a straight or curvy body shape as well as a few for size 16+ and maternity. By the way if you feel in need of some extra help (and don’t most of us?) check out the shapewear blog over on Capsule Wardrobes.

So – starting with a straight body shape. If you have shoulders and  hips of about the same width and not much of a waist look for straighter shaped dresses or crisper/stiffer fabrics. Avoid styles that drape and bias cuts. Give the illusion of curves with gentle shaping or curved pleating like the one below (top row, middle)

If you have a curvy body with a defined waist, whether you have subtle curves or more “Nigella” curves, you need a fabric and style that will drape around your assets. Look for bias cuts, soft fluid fabrics and a shaped waist. Go for a stretch lace like the one top row 2nd from right. Avoid straight lines and any detail on areas you want to conceal.

For those of you who are pear shaped it’s all about balancing out your hips with your shoulder line. Draw the eye up with detail on your top half and wider necklines will balance out the hips.

For the apple shaped lady (whose waist has gone missing) the shift dress, empire shape and soft draping is perfect. If you have a good cleavage focus on that and draw the eye away from the tummy area using some sparkle or jewellery. For a more fitted stye like the middle one below use pleating over the tummy and the pretty lace detail on the top to distract the eye.
