A couple of weeks ago I was invited to visit one of the two Eileen Fisher stores in London. They have been in the UK since last autumn and whilst they have a growing loyal following here they are very well known in their native US. My first encounter with the brand was in Fenwick in Bond Street and it was love at first site. I came home to google the brand so I could find out more about them and the more I read the more I KNEW I had to include Eileen Fisher in my wardrobe.
Those of you who are regular readers will know that I am passionate about capsule wardrobe collections and order in my wardrobe whilst also injecting personality with signature pieces. So you will understand that when I read the following I was very excited (long quote but really epitomises how I like to build a wardrobe):
“The Creative Closet
Each season, Eileen ventures into the depths of her closet and spends time thinking, editing and choosing what really works – for her body and for what she wants to express through her clothes. She eliminates the pieces she thought she might wear but didn’t – and finds tremendous clarity… Clarity about proportion and layering that inspires the design and focus of the collection.
The Creative Closet is a way of talking about something we’ve been doing for years: designing a system that lets women get dressed with ease and joy.
The word “closet” implies system. It presents the idea of an organized space where everything works together efficiently.
The word “creative” is an invitation. It encourages women to be artful, to play with the pieces they choose to wear, in their own unique ways.
Each season, the collections we design are large-scale Creative Closets. They offer choice, inspiration and above all continuity. Design ideas flow across fabric categories and across months, bringing energy, vitality and new opportunities for personal expression. The collections are also practical. They connect to what has come before, to fabrics our customers love and trust, to styles and proportions that are already in their closets.
Timeless by Design
If you buy clothes you love, clothes that move beautifully, clothes that will be your favorites for years and years, you are practicing a form of simplicity that is very close to our hearts.
We believe in holding beauty to a higher standard, one that sidesteps the trend-driven cycle of disposability. By a clear and conscious choice, we create clothes that connect, across the seasons and across the years.
We do this by keeping our shapes simple and developing core fabrics and yarn that return year after year. Choose what you love, create a look that works for your life, knowing that you can update it simply and easily when you come back next season.”
Doesn’t that just inspire you to visit? I know it did me. So thank you to the lovely Katharine from PushPR who took me to visit the store and huge thanks for the goodie bag containing a beautiful silk scarf and a gift voucher.
Despite being a muggy day I had to indulge in a good trying on session. This was both good and bad, good because you really see how the clothes work – they have more appeal on you than on the hanger. The fabrics are gorgeous – especially the silk jersey which drapes beautifully. And bad, because once on you start envisioning how these pieces will work in your wardrobe. One other note here, these must be the biggest changing rooms in London, plenty of space for the sales assistants to hang your choices in little capsules (can you see why I was in heaven!) and curtains that won’t expose you at just the wrong moment. It’s a wonderful calm shopping experience and the clothes go from XS to XL sized with real women in mind. Whilst on the high end high street price range these are not disposable pieces they are designed to work season after season in your wardrobe really earning their keep in cost per wear.
When I visited the sale had just started so I was absolutely delighted to find a charcoal grey silk jersey skirt at half price. Thanks to my aforementioned gift voucher I only need to add £29 to make it mine. The fabric is so soft as is the lining and it hangs beautifully. It will work both in summer with flat sandals and winter with boots. It’s one of those buys that you just know is going to become a favourite that you can pull out for any occasion dressed up or down. And this is what Eileen Fisher is all about, clothes you put on that look great but still allow you to express your personality.
You can buy online using the International Store site, but I would recommend you visit if you can, you won’t be disappointed. I am already looking forward to the Autumn season having seen some of the rich colours that will be coming. If you do visit let me know what you think.
