It’s been a week of finding new investment pieces to add to a capsule wardrobe. Starting with my trip to Eileen Fisher (more to come on that) and finishing yesterday with The Fold. It was a pleasure to meet the passionate Polly McMaster joint founder of The Fold and discover this must have range for the working woman.
I’ve been on a hunt for the perfect dress for the executive woman which fills the following requirements:
- Perfect fit
- Appropriate for the office but able to go on to dinner with a few accessory updates
- Great fabrics
- Classic with a twist
I’m excited to say I think I’ve found it. These dresses are investment pieces – ranging in price from £150 to £375 – but they tick all of the above boxes with added extras and are worth every penny.
Set up by two smart women – Polly a graduate of Cambridge and Cheryl a graduate of Harvard – who struggled to find work wear for themselves. As they say “The Fold is truly passionate that you should feel inspired and confident when you walk into any board-room, interview or presentation. You live in your work clothes for 60 hours a week (yes, we understand), so you should love them as much as you love your favourite cocktail dress. Never settle for average – inject some emotional reward into your working wardrobe, and start shopping with The Fold.”
These dresses are ideal for those already in the corner office as well as the young up and coming executive. So what are the added extras I mentioned?
The first one is surprising but brilliant. It’s all about the fit. The dresses come in sizes from 6 to 16. But one of the big problems women have with dresses is that they take a different size top and bottom. No problem here, a dress can be made for you in two different sizes and at no extra cost! The turn around is about a week. Other alterations are chargeable but the cost isn’t prohibitive at around the £20 mark.
The next added extra is the gorgeous fabrics. Most of the dresses come in a range of fabrics including cotton, wool, jersey and crepe. Having curves this really appeals to me because a dress in cotton which wouldn’t work on me would in silk or wool. The fabrics used really are beautiful and one of the things that make these dresses stand out. I could imagine them working really hard during the working day but also packing beautifully. And I was delighted to see that the linings are made of silk. So often when you spend a decent amount of money on a dress it is ruined by a cheap lining – yesterday was humid and I was wearing a favourite Maxmara dress which sadly has a nylon lining, suffice to say I certainly didn’t feel I could try any of these dresses on as I was rapidly melting!
Finally that classic with a twist requirement. The dresses are simple shapes but come with some great little touches like leather piping on a seam, suede sleeves or what The Fold call edgy tailoring.
I’m also really excited by the upcoming autumn range which will have a capsule collection including dress, skirt, trousers and tunic tops a perfect selection to build your capsule work wardrobe around.
If you are a woman in business who wants to dress in the morning, know you look fabulous and not have to worry about your outfit for the rest of the day these are investment pieces that would see you to your next promotion and beyond.
