Prints Charming – How to Wear Prints this Spring

One of the big trends for this Spring/Summer is prints. I’ve already covered animal prints which seem to crop up again and again, but this season florals and the new “scarf” print are in for those of you who’d like to wear a print but have ‘done’ animal.

Prints are great for hiding figure flaws but you need to make sure that the scale of the print is right for you. If you are petite you will drowned in large flowers and equally if you are larger scale a delicate floral will look twee. Luckily – I seem to keep saying this – but there is something for everyone both in scale of print and colour.

On the catwalks Diane von Furstenberg gave us bold florals and graphics, Dolce and Gabanna had some stunning hothouse flowers perfect for the Italian riviera, Jill Sander used paisley, D&G did the new scarf print, Issa had gorgeous sea colours and Erdem delicate and feminine blue flowers on a white background – a print that reminded me of fine china.

My favourite has to be the orange floral print from Dolce and Gabanna but I would need the lifestyle to go with it – sitting in an Italian Piazza in the sunshine people watching.

There are plenty of options on the high street as well. Bold florals have gone main stream particularly at Phase Eight and Hobbs. Prints are well represented at Boden, with florals, dots, and geometrics, inlcuding a great take on a Diane von Furtsenberg shirt waist full skirted dress but at a fraction of the DVF price. If bold prints are a step too far for you have a look at Fenn Wright Manson and Jigsaw who have both done more muted and wearable prints in this summer’s blues and corals.
