When you think of a stylish woman or one catches your eye what is it you notice?
It’s not that they are dressed top to toe in designer clothes or the latest fashion trends and they may not have the perfect figure – to me a woman with true style is comfortable and confident in her look. I think this is something that a lot of British women find quite hard, many of us were taught as a child not to “show off” or be conceited. And rather than look in the mirror and say my hair looks great, or this colour looks really good on me we point out what we perceive to be our failings.
I can’t tell you how many times when I was working full time as an Style consultant I would have a client stand in front of a mirror and then proceed to point out to me everything that was wrong with them “I’ve broken out in spots today and my hair desperately needs cutting” or that old one “I just need to lose half a stone”.
Many years ago I was given a great piece of advice from a wise lady who told me if someone pays you a compliment just smile and say “thank you”. What do we normally do – we say “what this old thing I got it in the sale” or “No my hair looks awful today it got damp and it’s gone frizzy” – how does that make the compliment giver feel? The simple words thank you make them feel good for having given the compliment and it makes you feel good to. Try it.
So here is what I think makes a stylish woman:
- She’s not a slave to fashion but does have a nod to the latest trends
- She is groomed – she looks like she cares
- She wears clothes that flatter her body shape and colouring
- She has a signature style or accessory
- She wears things she loves which make her feel good
- She looks comfortable in herself and her outfit
