There are some Christmas wardrobe essentials that you can add now, that will make you immediately party ready, even if it’s a last minute invitation. However, as you know I am all for cost per wear, so I recommend having pieces in your Winter capsule wardrobe that are multi tasking. Clever pieces that you will wear more than once throughout the party season, but that won’t look dated next year or the year after. If you have read my post on velvet jeans you will know how useful they can be at this time of year too and you might want to add a pair to your Christmas wardrobe essentials.
Below are some suggestions, yours may be different, but if you have similar in your wardrobe, you won’t be caught out with nothing to wear.
Christmas Wardrobe Essentials – Suggestions
A smart coat – Choose a neutral coloured one that looks just as good over a party dress as it does over jeans. The obvious choice is a classic camel coat. But Navy or black are good options too if they work better with your wardrobe.
A velvet blazer – Again this will dress up or down. Wear it over an evening party outfit, perhaps with matching trousers as a suit with a sparkly top. For a more relaxed evening wear it with jeans. But wear it during the daytime too, for lunches over a knit dress and knee boots.
A sparkly knit – A knit with sparkle or embellishment is an easy and quick way to transform plain trousers or jeans into something a little more special. Plus if you feel the cold, wear it over a pretty lace cami and it will keep you warm too.
Tailored trousers – Choose navy or black and you can literally add anything on top to wear for a party. Add a sequin top, camisole and jacket, sparkly knit or velvet blazer. If you are going from desk to dinner wear these during the day and then swap your top and shoes. Wear them during the day over Christmas too, with a deep red knit to keep the look festive.
Little xx Dress – As in your version of the Little Black Dress. Here I have gone for a simple, classic style in navy. This dress won’t date and would work for years to come. I’ve styled it for a cocktail party and a daytime event, perhaps a Winter wedding.
Sparkly top – Add this top to skirts, trousers and even jeans for a festive look. It needs no other jewellery except perhaps a pair of earrings and would work brilliantly under the velvet blazer.
Clutch bag – Choose a neutral colour or a goes with everything metallic. I’ve chosen one here with a chain strap to keep hands free when you are at a cocktail party with drinks and food in your hands, or maybe taking that Instagram shot.
Embellished shoes – I sound like a broken record, but choose a neutral or a metallic and you know it will work with everything. A mid or kitten heel is your best option for comfort. But if you only do flats make them a stunning pair.
Jewellery – I would include a statement necklace and some fabulous earrings. You can dress up a simple top or sweater with a fabulous necklace. Or if you can, put your hair up and add a pair of statement earrings.
A Faux Fur scarf – Adds a luxurious touch and dresses up your coat, velvet jacket and your knitwear too.
You probably already have some of my Christmas wardrobe essentials in your wardrobe and may only need to add one or two pieces. These are worth the investment as you will wear them in years to come. Some of the items, the accessories and dress wouldn’t be out of place for Summer events too.
