A recent enquiry came from a reader about what to wear for a black tie dinner. The choice is whether to buy a dress which will be worn only for this type of occasion or whether to buy something that could be worn completely differently in the future.
Black Tie used to mean a long dress but dress code has become more relaxed over the last few years and often you will see cocktail (short) dresses now worn at events that state black tie on the invitation. I would suggest that if you receive a black tie invitation you take into account what and where the event is. The more formal the event and the setting, the more likely you should wear long.
The good news is that we are also more likely to see long dresses worn casually in the summer – the maxi dress has been popular for several years now and that doesn’t look like changing.
So below I’ve picked 3 dresses that will work for black tie.
The first is jersey maxi dress in on trend cobalt blue £129 from Baukjen which can be glammed up with silver accessories, but also worn on your summer holiday with flat thong sandals and a basket.
Next is a classic and figure flattering front wrap dress £120 from Phase Eight a gorgeous colour for Spring but would look equally good at Christmas with a cream fur wrap.
Finally I’ve gone for a Timeless lace dress £249 from Somerset at John Lewis. This is a dress that could be in your wardrobe for years earning it’s cost per wear. Keep the accessories simple and let the classic shape and lace do the talking.
Black or metallic sandals and bags are always good staples to have as part of a capsule wardrobe for an unexpected invitation and a classic style like those above won’t date.
